Alex Thomas is a double Grierson Award winning, Emmy, BAFTA and RTS nominated filmmaker whose work blends a distinctive visual identity with deeply purpose-driven storytelling. His documentaries are known for their emotional impact, ethical clarity and ability to spark real-world change.

Alex’s recent Sky Original Bibaa & Nicole: Murder in the Park became a landmark British documentary. Praised by Grierson judges for its exceptional access, emotional depth and uncompromising ethical approach — describing it as a masterclass in storytelling — the film reframed the true-crime genre by centering dignity, community and systemic accountability. Its national impact, including sparking debate on policing and racial injustice and contributing to changes in policing legislation, earned Alex two Grierson Awards for Best Documentary Series and Best Crime & Social Justice Documentary.

He is currently directing a major authored feature documentary for the BBC with an Emmy award winning production company and a Hollywood A-lister, continuing his focus on character-led, socially resonant filmmaking.

Alex’s wider work includes the Emmy-nominated Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Colour with Idris Elba, BAFTA Breakthrough - Yorkshire Cop: Police, Racism and Me (C4) and the Broadcast nominated Britain’s Secret War Babies(C4). His storytelling is defined by authenticity, emotional clarity and a commitment to uncovering the human truth behind wider historical and social forces.

Originally trained as an architect, Alex discovered filmmaking while building a school in rebel-held Colombia. Picking up a camera to help his adoptive community tell their story led to a journalism career across seven continents for UNICEF, Save the Children, The New York Times and The Guardian. This global grounding shapes his ability to navigate sensitive environments with empathy, calmness and editorial rigour.

A multi award-winning photographer, Alex brings a distinctive visual language to every project. His steady, inclusive leadership has shaped productions such as the RTS and Broadcast nominated Africa Renaissance(BBC2), where narratives evolved dynamically and required both sensitivity and creative precision.

Alex also mentors emerging filmmakers through Channel 4 and We Are Parable, championing new voices whose lived experiences reflect the world we live in — and the world we hope to build.
