Kwabena Oppong is an award-nominated director and producer whose work blends social issues, popular culture, and untold stories with a strong visual aesthetic and emotionally driven storytelling. His 2025 feature-length documentary Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd (BBC2) saw Kwabena recognised in Broadcast’s Hot Shots 2025. He has delivered series, singles and feature length films for US and UK networks including Netflix, BBC and Channel 4.
Kwabena got his break in television through the Mama Youth trainee scheme, and he soon found a home in documentary, working his way through the ranks on
heavy hitting documentary series like Tough Young Teachers and Educating the East End.
As a producer, he co-developed and worked on the award-winning Mo Gilligan: Black, British and Funny (C4) in 2020, before making his first foray into premium documentary with Untold: Swamp Kings (Netflix), which he produced and edit-produced. The series, charting the mythic run of the Florida Gators between 2005 and 2010,was a major hit - reaching number 1 on Netflix in the US, number 3 in the UK, and landing in the top 10 globally. The success of the series cemented Kwabena’s passion for retrospective documentaries and led to his selection for the Edinburgh TV Festival’s prestigious Ones to Watch scheme in 2022.
Kwabena’s co-directing debut, The Final: Attack on Wembley (Netflix) followed in 2023. The film used thousands of pieces of user-generated footage and first-hand testimony to tell the story of the storming of Wembley Stadium during England’s Euros final. Nominated for a Broadcast Sport award, the film peaked at Number 2 in the Netflix UK charts.
Building on this success, Kwabena directed two very different but equally impactful films. Linford (BBC One) is an emotive, unflinching look at Olympian Linford Christie, exploring his triumphs alongside racism, sexual objectification, and doping allegations. Released the day before the Olympics, the film drew 1.4 million viewers and earned 4- and 5-star reviews, with The Guardian calling it “heartbreaking” and The Times asking if we’ve “underappreciated our greatest sprinter.”
Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd (BBC Two/Theatrical release) is a bold, cinematic investigation into the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK and US (BBC Two/Theatrical release). Featuring, for the first time on camera, Minneapolis Chief of Police Medaria Arradondo, A-list talent, activists, and insiders, the film has been widely acclaimed - The Guardian called it “a timely recap” and The Times “powerful and thoughtful.” It screened at BAFTA, inspired a BBC panel at the Sheffield Documentary Festival, and led to a talk at the Open University about its making.
Kwabena takes a calm and measured approach to filmmaking. He is drawn to films that draw attention to unrepresented communities and can be crafted with both heart and humour.
