Great response to “immaculately made” documentary from Stern & Wild client uncovering the Church of England’s biggest scandal

We are delighted by the response to last night’s broadcast of the first episode of SEE NO EVIL, the latest documentary from Stern & Wild filmmaker Kira Phillips which details abuse and cover-up in the Church of England.

Screening over two consecutive nights on Channel 4, the powerful documentary offers a forensic exploration of the decades of abuse by former barrister and evangelical leader John Smyth and the subsequent cover-up by senior leaders within the Church of England and other institutions.

“… an immaculately made, deeply harrowing two-part documentary about the man a report (that came far too long after the fact) would say was probably the most prolific serial abuser ever associated with the Church of England… “

Lucy Mangan, The Guardian ★★★★

“See No Evil offers a chilling insight into how vile church predator John Smyth got away with his crimes for so long… some of those who knew [him], including his own three children, explained how it was possible to be aware of his malicious intent and still be powerless to speak of it.”

Christopher Stevens, The Daily Mail ★★★★★

“It is not unusual, sadly, to see documentaries in which the victims of child abuse describe the foul crimes of their tormentor. It’s rarer to see the children and indeed the wife of said torturer appearing on television to lay bare the dark family shame. However, this is what happens in episode two (tonight) of See No Evil (Channel 4), a profoundly disturbing but excellent exposé of the sadistic, narcissistic yet hugely charismatic barrister and Christian evangelist John Smyth, who would flog naked young boys with hundreds of lashes and tell them they were bleeding for Jesus.”

Carol Midgley, The Times ★★★★

SEE NO EVIL is a Passion Pictures production for Channel 4. Kira and Hamish Fergusson are Executive Producers. The Series Director is Benedict Sanderson.

The second film, which includes an interview with John Smyth’s wife Anne, airs tonight on Channel 4 at 9.00pm. Both episodes are available to stream on the C4 platform.
